Bachelor Thesis

Reconstructing Ebernburg Castle

2020

Tasks

Scripting via Blueprints, Modeling, Lighting, Rendering

I did this reconstruction of Ebernburg Castle in UE4 as my bachelor thesis. The goal was to reconstruct the castle in the year 1697 before it got destroyed in 1698.
The project consists of 3 major parts:
1. Scanning the castle as it exists today with laserscan and photogrammetry - Combining excellent mesh (laser) with high-res textures (photogrammetry) in Metashape 1.7.
I did the full quality only on one selected building since I didnt have the time and machinepower to scan the whole castle in such a high texture resolution.
2. Reconstructing the castle from 1697 based on the 3d-Scan and various floorplans/drawings from 1697 and earlier
3. Visualizing both 1697 and the "Status quo" alltogether in UE4 - This resulted in various renderings/ sequences aswell as in a VR-Application that makes one able to teleport around the Castle and switch dynamicly between both states.
I was working with the historican and archeologist Stefan Köhl to be able to make the reconstruction a realistic as possible.
In addition to the direct references, Mr. Köhl was also able to provide various buildings that are very similar to what the castle should have looked like back then. The vegetation aswell as most of the generic props (barrels etc.) are from Megascans.
Textures are also partly from Megascans/ Mixer (e.g. walls/ ground), the rest are personal scans (e.g. slate roofs/ walls) and Substance Designer materials (e.g. tiled roofs).
It was a very interesting project to work on and I got a ton of new knowledge and expirience considering scanning techniques, historical visualisation and workflows with Unreal Engine.
